Alternative Christmas Market -- Gift-Giving That Makes a Difference

Written by Saint Andrew on . Posted in Announcements

Give a gift this Christmas that makes a difference in the lives of others. New this year, St. Andrew is hosting a Christmas market supporting Partners in Hope Reentry Ministry and Lafayette Transitional Housing Services. Make a donation in honor of a loved one this Christmas, and your money will go to provide transportation for our formerly incarcerated neighbors and services for those experiencing homelessness.  You'll receive a Christmas card and a small token to give the person you've honored.  A minimum donation of $15 is requested.  A donation of $30 provides one full month of CityBus transportation for Partners in Hope.

Donations can also be made online. If making a donation online, provide your email address. A virtual Christmas card will be sent to you, which you can then forward to the person you want to honor.  The small token is not available to those making a donation online. Online giving is available here under Special Events.  The deadline for online giving is noon on Thursday, December 21.

The Alternative Christmas Market will be open at St. Andrew in the Commons on Sunday morning, Dec. 10, during the Sounds of the Season meal on Dec. 10, the morning of Sunday, Dec. 17, and Christmas Eve morning.

I Can Do That

Written by St Andrew on . Posted in Come and See

God is real. He is not just someone I read about. He lives in my heart. His promises and plans come alive as I study His words. He reigns in heaven and over the earth.  He walked on earth as Jesus the Christ, our redeemer and savior. When I said “yes” to his call He swirled around me and settled in my soul, setting it on fire.

He is peace, joy, love, compassion, father, friend, confidant, savior and more adjectives than I can ever dream up. My protector, a problem solver, advisor, doctor, shoulder to cry on, peacemaker and redeemer. He is beyond human description and yet I try because I love Him. I want everyone to know my wonderful God.

This is the Day...

This space has its roots in the history of how this congregation came to be - a group of Jesus followers inviting others to come and see Christ and live faith out together.  Once a month, we will bring forth a devotional from years gone by.  Today we re-member (put together again in our minds) from thirty-seven years ago  in the Lenten Devotional of 1980 - March 19th to be precise.

Read Matthew 20:17-34

"This is the day the Lord hath made.  Let us rejoice and be glad in it."

These words have been put to a joyous tune which I have sung with children many times.  The children clap and move with the rhythm.  Their eyes sparkle and there are smiles on their faces.  Oh, that I could recall that feeling of joy when...

  -  my son cut a hole in the tablecloth, destroyed my favorite plant, and spilled paint all over the floor.

Who Am I?

It has been many years, at least 30, since I received the call that would change my thinking about who I am forever.  My father revealed to each of his children a secret that he had held for most of his life.  He had been born out of wedlock and did not know actually, who his father was.  It had not been revealed to him until her was an adult but shame kept him from trying to find an answer.  He also asked each of us to keep this a secret, never mentioning it again as long as he was alive.  It was a sad moment in my life on many different levels.

Living from Abundance

Written by St Andrew on . Posted in Come and See

It is here.  The holiday season is upon us.  And so are the competing story lines which threaten to derail us.  Is this the most wonderful time of the year when we gather with friends and family many times over the next 5+ weeks to give thanks, spread cheer, offer love, and celebrate?  Is this the most delicious or unhealthy season when plate after plate passes before us?  Is this the most expensive time of the year as we travel and unleash the credit card?  Is this the worst time of year when our lives are compared to those with whom we grew up with and we are defined by our accomplishments or possessions (or lack thereof)?  Is this the hardest time of the year when we are painfully reminded of the loved ones lost or unfulfilled relationships in the empty chairs around the table?

The questions can go on for days.  We can get lost in the mental calisthenics of having our answers correspond to our dreams and emotions.  I want to propose another perspective which has aided me greatly.  It is one I came to several years back.

All honor and glory are yours God!  I see you in the sweeping wind and the crashing storms-your mighty power revealed.  I see the beauty of your creation everywhere I look and I rejoice that you would give us such a place to dwell.  There is color, vibrant color and I am stunned that you created such glorious shades just for our eyes.  I see you in the newborn babe and I wonder at your precision and I rejoice in new life that brings us hope.   I see you in the majestic waterfalls and I hear you in the mighty roar of them.  I look upon the tiny blossoms and I am in awe of the intricacy with which you have created even the smallest thing.  I look to the vast heavens, beyond my ability to even conceive and I wonder at your amazing work!  Do you God, dwell in the center of the stars?  You must for there is nothing finer to the eye or more immense!
